LESSON OVERVIEW
Winterfell Stables offers both Western and English riding lessons, all taught by experienced instructors. Lessons progress as the rider follows the rider level curriculum of the Equine Canada Learn to Ride Program. We believe in order to be a successful, safe rider you need to develop skills both on the horse and on the ground. Throughout your grooming time to the lesson cool-down, you will learn how to care, understand, and ride the horses. Our variety of lesson packages are listed and described below. Be sure to visit our what to wear page to ensure you arrive ready for your lesson.
Lessons are available in various disciplines including hunter/jumper, dressage, and western pleasure.
SHOWING OPPORTUNITY
In addition to offering riding lessons, students are welcome to join our show team and participate in schooling shows throughout the Ottawa Valley and Ottawa region. If you or your child is interested in riding during the 2022 show season, please speak with Hilary to ensure begin planning and working towards our show goals. We also host one show on-property per year, which is an excellent introduction to the show environment.
EQUINE CANADA RIDER LEVEL PREPARATION
Ever wonder why your/your child's instructor asks you to drop your stirrups, ride certain figures, and repeat specific exercises? The rubrics for rider levels are outlined on the Ontario Equestrian website and list progressions that instructors look for and teach in a student's discipline to help determine when they are ready to canter, jump, etc. Whether you wish to pursue a career in the equine industry or set and achieve personal goals, Rider Levels are for available for anyone to work towards and test for by a certified Instructor/Coach. Levels test your written, hands on skills, and riding. Please contact Hilary if you wish to begin working towards rider levels for more information and to develop a study plan.

ASSESSMENT: New riders to Winterfell are required to ride an assessment lesson to determine what group lesson they would best suit and demonstrate prior learned skills.
PRIVATE: A private lesson allows for one-on-one teaching with a coach. Private lessons are mandatory for first-time riders until they have learned the necessary skills to properly control a horse with others in the ring before joining a group lesson. Private lessons are also useful for riders working towards a specific goal, as they are able to have their coaches undivided attention.
GROUP: Riders will be placed in a group of 2-3 students, working towards similar goals in their riding career. Riding in a group allows for the chance to learn from and encourage other riders, while improving your equitation skills at an affordable rate.
PRACTICE RIDE: Students who have been granted permission are able to practice skills they have been working on in their lessons through an unsupervised ride. The ride must be during barn hours, and must be booked ahead of time.
AVAILABILITY: Lessons are available throughout the day and evening Monday-Thursday.
